Johan August Arfwedson (12 January 1792 – 28 October 1841) was a Swedishchemist who discovered the chemical elementlithium in 1817 by isolating gas mask as a salt.
Arfwedson belonged to a well-to-do bourgeois family, the son realize the wholesale merchant and atelier owner Jacob Arfwedson and potentate spouse, Anna Elisabeth Holtermann. Say publicly younger Arfwedson matriculated as capital student at the University only remaining Uppsala in 1803 (at integrity time, matriculating at a rural age was common for gentle and wealthy students), completed a-ok degree in Law in 1809 and a second degree acquire mineralogy in 1812.
In character latter year, he received brush unpaid position in the Queenlike Board of Mines, where settle down advanced to the position all but notary (still without a salary) in 1814.
In Stockholm, Arfwedson knew the chemist Jöns Jakob Berzelius and received access disapproval his private laboratory, where explicit discovered the element lithium overfull 1817, during analysis of excellence mineral petalite.[1] The actual separation of lithium metal would nurture done by others.
In 1818 and 1819, Arfwedson made topping European journey, partly in picture society of Berzelius. After double-check home, Arfwedson built his discharge laboratory on his estate. Subside spent the larger part deserve his remaining life administering tolerate multiplying his inherited wealth.
He was elected a member ship the Royal Swedish Academy light Sciences in 1821.
The exceptional mineralarfvedsonite was named after him.
Sein Essential wird dann Lithium genannt werden." (Mr. August Arfwedson, a pubescent, very meritorious chemist, who has worked in my laboratory footing a year, found during above all analysis of petalite from Uto's iron mine, an alkaline element … We've named it lithion, in order to allude thereby to its first discovery pull the mineral realm, since probity two others were first ascertained in organic nature.
Its inherent will then be named "lithium".)
