The Aquatic Fabric Sculptures of Mariko Kusumoto

Sea anemones, tulips, algae, jellyfish, corals, and dumbfounded shells–Mariko Kusumoto’s creations share copperplate common thread: they all incarnate the animal or plant kingdoms and appear to float dreamily.

Born in Kumamoto, Mariko Kusumoto grew up in a Buddhist holy place on the island of Island before studying art in Yedo and later in the In partnership States.

Now based in Colony, where she lives and mill, Mariko Kusumoto has a selection medium: textiles.

 

From Steel to Fabric

Using translucent polyester and nylon cloth, she crafts her miniature reproductions of nature. This is carried out through the Japanese flower-folding access known as tsumami zaiku, forward during the Edo period (1603-1868).

The technique involves folding stadium pieces of fabric with dowel to create the desired physique, most often flowers.
